One-third child cancer can be cured totally in our country if the disease is detected and treated at an early stage. National Professor Dr. M. R. Khan said this while addressing as chief guest at a meeting, organised by Ahsania Mission Cancer Hospital (AMCH), in observance of World Cancer Survivors’ Day, at Dhanmondi Ahsania Mission Bhaban auditorium in Dhaka on 6 June 2010. The National Professor stressed on raising mass awareness in this regard. He urged the print and electronic media to come forward to this effect. He underscored the need for changing life style and food habit. He also urged for shunning addiction of tobacco and tobacco related products. In his presidential address, Dhaka Ahsania Mission President Kazi Rafiqul Alam said, 70 per cent cancer can be cured if detected and cured earlier. This is why, it is essential to build a social movement for creating mass awareness in this regard. If cancer survivors are provided with physical, social and economic support then they can lead an active and productive life. This is why, we should pay respect to the cancer survivors. Chaired by Dhaka Ahsania Mission President Kazi Rafiqul Alam, the meeting was attended by National Professor Dr. M. R. Khan as Chief Guest. Professor Emeritus of Amsterdam University Dr. A.B.M. F. Karim who was expected to attend the function as Special Guest could not come to the venue due to illness. He sent a message saying, ‘I pay my respect to the cancer survivors for winning the battle for life. I pray for their long life.’ The Project Director of Ahsania Mission Cancer Hospital, Dr. Md. Lutfar Rahman and the Director of Mirpur Ahsania Mission Cancer Detection Centre and Hospital, Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. Syed Fazle Rahim took part in the discussion. While expressing their feelings, cancer survivors Abdul Matin Sarder, Peara Begum and Mosabber Hossain said, we are all right and happy. If treated at right time, cancer can be fully cured, they said adding, please pray for us. In his address, the Project Director of Ahsania Mission Cancer Hospital, Dr. Md. Lutfar Rahman said, according to a report of the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 2 lakh out of 140 million people are attacked with cancer. It extends far and wide among 4 lakh people while the rate of mortality is about 1.5 lakh. Every year, about 167 out of every one lakh people are being attacked with the disease anew. If the trend continues then the number of patients will be doubled in 25 years. According to IARC, in the country, the rate of mortality of cancer was 7.5 per cent in 2005. If the trend continues in such a manner, the rate of mortality will be 13 per cent within the year of 2030.
